In California, felonies are the most serious crimes. If you've been charged with such an offense and you're convicted, you could be facing years behind bars and may be subjected to thousands of dollars in fines. Having dedicated legal representation on your side could mean the difference between your freedom and incarceration.

At Jay Jaffe Attorney at Law, I Attorney Jay Jaffe, am dedicated to providing top-notch legal representation to individuals facing criminal charges. Backed by over 40 years of experience working in criminal justice, I know how to develop effective legal strategies and present a strong defense to fight accusations. On top of being selected to the California Super Lawyers list in 2004 - 2017 & 2019 - 2020, I have also been honored at USC's 8th Annual Alumni Baseball Banquet, where I received the Spirit of Troy award. How Are Felonies Defined?

In California, the two levels of offenses are misdemeanors and felonies, which are the more serious of the two.

Specifically, a felony is a crime that could carry the following types of penalties:

  • Death sentence
  • A state prison sentence
  • A county jail sentence of 16 months or 2 or 3 years

What Offenses are Felonies?

A number of different crimes could be charged as felonies. Some offenses are straight felonies, which means they are only charged at this level. An example of a straight felony would be murder. A conviction for this offense could result in 25 years to life in prison or death.

Other offenses are called "wobblers." That means they can be charged as either misdemeanors or felonies. Assault with a deadly weapon is a wobbler offense. If a person is found guilty, a judge could impose a jail term of up to 1 year or a prison sentence of 2, 3, or 4 years. When a person commits a wobbler offense, the level they are charged with depends on their specific circumstances.
